Maroma Resort and Spa - Solidaridad (Riviera Maya), Mexico
Located 20 minutes from Cancun airport, you first encounter Maroma’s ecological preserve at their entrance. As you approach the main building, you think you are in a Mayan ruin. Walls covered with vines, very lush foliage, statues, and fountains. A member of the Orient-Express group of hotels, Maroma is a secluded getaway favored by CEOs, celebrities and politicos; former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Britain’s Prince William were among previous guests.
The resort is a white-stucco combination of Greek/Mayan architecture, designed by architect Jose Luis Moreno as his private residence. He gradually expanded the home and then opened it as a resort. (Mr. Moreno was involved in the creation of Cancun in 1976). The resort is intimate with 58 rooms and suites; included in your rates are full American breakfast daily, a snorkel trip to the reef off their beach, and roundtrip airport transfers.
The Kinan Spa offers treatments based on ancient Mayan healing; some of the offerings will not be found in any other spa in the world. They even have a real Mayan steam room with hot rocks, where you enter and go underground while someone splashes cool water on you, burns incense and mutters Mayan incantations!
There are three options for dining: El Sol, Cilantro, and El Restaurante; Mayan specialties and spa cuisine are among the celebrated offerings. There is also a tequila and ceviche bar; a tequila sommelier will offer suggestions from over 100 tequilas paired with six exotic ceviches prepared tableside. You also have the option of in-room dining available 24 hours a day. The beautiful and private beach faces the open sea with spectacular water colors. The surf is a bit strong here.
Every room is different. I saw a huge garden room with a very large patio featuring a hammock, table and chairs. All rooms have either this type of patio or a balcony. Rooms don’t offer television to maintain the serene atmosphere; there is a stereo and high-speed internet access to keep you connected if you desire. Rooms have tile floors, huge bathtub/shower combos with a separate room for the toilet. Very upscale bath amenities are included. Beds are covered with mosquito netting, including the four poster beds offered in suites. To stay cool, you have a choice of ceiling fans and air-conditioning. Please note garden view rooms are shaded from the sun by the foliage and are near the walkways on the grounds.
The grounds are beautiful; two magnificent macaws greet you as you enter the resort. There are fountains throughout, wonderful lush plantings and beautiful pools which can be very private.
SOMETHING SPECIAL: You can climb about 4 stories up to the very top of the resort, in a sort of Moorish tower lookout with a spectacular view of the beach and the Caribbean. There is a private lounge area where you can watch the sunset, have a drink or just hang out.
OVERALL IMPRESSION: This is a true luxury resort. It’s very quiet and there’s a good mix of younger and older guests. While not recommended for someone looking for lots of excitement, it’s wonderful for relaxing and getting away from it all.
