Le Meurice - Paris, France
Le Meurice is located on the Rue de Rivoli, opposite the Jardins Tuileries on the corner of the Rue Castiglione (where the Westin is also located). It is a few doors from the famous Angelina’s Salon de Thé, known for the best hot chocolate and pastries in Paris (and some of the most expensive!). The Rue de Rivoli is lively location, with a bit of traffic and many friendly, unintimidating shops within easy reach. It’s very convenient to the Metro (Concorde station on Line #1). It is within walking distance of the Hotel de Crillon and the American Embassy. There is also a British bookstore, W. H. Smith, on the next corner. You can walk to the Louvre and to the Musée d’Orsay.
Le Meurice dates from the end of the 19th century. Some public area were recently refurbished and decorated by Philippe Starck, an ultra-modern designer. In contrast to the Louis XIV style of the rooms, the décor may not be to everyone’s taste. The lobby is very impressive - it opens onto their luncheon dining room, which is very large and luxuriously appointed. There is banquette seating around the perimeter, lots of flowers, chandeliers etc. There are many staff members at the revolving doors to assist you as you enter and leave. And the most wonderful thing of all, there is no smell of stale smoke in any of the public areas or restaurants - the new anti-smoking law when into effect earlier this year and is working beautifully.
Deluxe rooms are large with Louis XIV period furnishings. Bathrooms are large and adorned with white marble with black markings - very dramatic. Some deluxe rooms have walk-in closets. Almost all the rooms here look out onto a very busy street with lots of traffic - with the windows open, there can be lots of noise. They have virtually no courtyard to speak of - I was told that in summer they serve drinks or breakfast in the very small courtyard. On the plus side many rooms offer French balconies; from the deluxe rooms, there is a panoramic view of the Louvre, Tuileries, Place de la Concorde, the dome Les Invalides, and the Eiffel Tower - truly spectacular!
Le Meurice has high level of service, comfort and standing with a great central location.
