The Royal in Playa del Carmen is in my opinion the most well rounded, adults-only resort I have been to.  That is a pretty bold statement considering as I write this I have been to 20.  What makes it well rounded is its class and location. This is a 5-star adults-only resort.  The accommodations and food meet or exceed most 5-star resorts.  All rooms come with a mini bar, liquor dispenser, a huge Jacuzzi, 24 hour room service and wireless internet.  The furnishings are made up of dark hard wood and are accompanied with modern décor. When you upgrade to an ocean view junior suite you get Royal Service which is comprised of a number of amenities. Most notable is the flat screen TV, the Bose theatre sound with an I-pod docking station. As you go higher and higher in the room categories you get better bathroom amenities, added inclusions and a better view. For example some rooms come with a Mini Cooper rental for 1 hour and the Penthouses come with unlimited international calls.

When it comes to dining you have a number of options. For breakfast you have your choice of two great buffets. For lunch you can go back to the buffets or enjoy two sit down a la carte restaurants. My favorite thing on the menu for lunch is rack of lamb that is absolutely delicious. Considering most places, even some of the best all-inclusive resorts only offer simple things like burgers and pizza for lunch, rack of lamb was a welcomed change. For dinner you have three more places to choose from including Chef’s Plate which is a small gourmet restaurant and the only one that requires a reservation. If you are celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary I can make one reservation for you in this restaurant in advance. In addition you also have Italian and Oriental a la carte restaurants that open for dinner only. The Oriental restaurant has your regular tables, tepanyaki and a sushi bar.

One of the coolest things about his resort is its location. It is located right in the heart of Playa del Carmen. It is still beachfront but you can walk to all the shopping and nightlife of 5th avenue as it is just a block away. 5th Avenue is a street that is closed in for only foot traffic and has a number of bars, restaurants, night clubs and a lot of shops. The beach in Playa del Carmen is lined with 2 Real Resorts (the parent company of this resort) a couple of small hotels and a bunch of restaurants and bars. So during the day you can walk the beach and go bar hopping.

This resort is made up of one building that has three wings. All the rooms are in the wings with the lobby, theatre, spa, restaurants, gift shops and 24 hour all inclusive lounge in the middle of it. In the middle of the two main wings is the pool. The pool is pretty big and has two parts to it. One is more for relaxation with a Jacuzzi attached to it and the other is for water volleyball and has the swim up bar. Their beach is lined with beach beds. If you are in an oceanfront room or higher you can have one assigned to you for the entire week. If you are in an ocean view or garden view junior suite then you have to go to the concierge every day to get one assigned to you for that day only. If you are in a beach front walk out junior suite the rooms comes with one right outside your door. There is waiter service on the beach and around the pool.

This resort is more active than your average adults-only resort. You will find people relaxing and reading a book but you will also find a lot of people playing volleyball, doing water aerobics and things like that. Due to its location people are always out and about doing things. As a result the resort never looks full even though they are at 100% occupancy 9 months out of the year.
Reasons to book this resort: You are looking for an adults-only resort close to shopping and night life. You are looking for a resort where the atmosphere is romantic but still has activities to keep you entertained.
Reasons not to book this resort: You are looking for a resort that is more secluded. You are bringing your kids.
