Riu Cancun
I just returned from escorting a group to the Riu Cancun which is centrally located along the hotel strip in Cancun. The hotel is also conveniently located across the street from a major shopping mall, Plaza Caracol. This group has been traveling to this resort for the last 6 years. The staff as the Riu Cancun resort is excellent and they are very dedicated to taking great care of their hotel guests.
Riu Cancun has a large selection of food to choose from at their buffet restaurant. Our group also had a fabulous semi-private dinner at the Steak House. If you are a meat lover, their Brazilian restaurant is for you! Skewers of meat are brought by the table consistently throughout the dinner, a different meat each time. They also have a Japanese restaurant which has great food and was a fun experience. For dinner, the Brazilian, Steak House and Japanese Restaurants require reservations, along with long pants and collared shirts for the gentlemen and no shorts for the women.
The hotel rooms are simple rooms, with simple furnishings. Many rooms are ocean view, but there are some that only give you a glimpse of the ocean. If you like a little larger room, purchase a Jr. Suite. The Jr Suites give you an extra sitting room area with the TV. It’s quite a bit larger. There are mini-bars located in every room along with a liquor cabinet that includes 4 bottles of liquor that you can drink during the week at no extra charge. The beds are large and are extra firm beds (I love them) but some people find them too hard. You can ask for a topper if you like a softer bed. If you ask for 2 double beds, you will find the beds are pushed together, but the bedding is made up separately on each bed.
The pools at the Riu Cancun are great. The resort also has a very good entertainment staff and the nightly entertainment was great as well. Beach is nice but quite small due to the last few hurricanes. Renovations to the beach have not been done in that area because it is an environmentally protected area and so they may not be able to do any restoring of the beach.
Overall, it’s a great all inclusive property. Very nice for couples and/or families.
