Camino Real Oaxaca
The Camino Real in Oaxaca was originally built as the Santa Catalina de Siena Convent. This property is one of the colonial treasures of the historic city of Oaxaca. Each of the hotel’s 91 rooms and suites share a view either to the gardens or of the picturesque street scene. Guests pass through high-ceilinged passageways and ornate doorways, alongside frescoes, fountains and colorful gardens.
From the l6th century when the building was a Convent, the municipal government took possession and modified it to a jail. Other developments included a criminal courts department and guard’s barracks. The building was also used as a storage warehouse for the government’s seized goods, a slaughterhouse, a gymnasium, and as a dormitory for the town crier.
Now guests sleep on “Magic Beds”, the best in Mexico or anywhere, and enjoy the amenities of a five-star hotel with fine service, a bar, even a swimming pool. The breakfast buffet at the hotel serves authentic Oaxaca cuisine and also Americanized breakfast offerings. You may taste chapulines, toasted grasshoppers, or you could enjoy wonderful hot chocolate with cinnamon, sugar, and crushed almonds. You may also sample the mole, famous in Oaxaca.
Every weekend the Chapel is filled with music and dancing often accompanied by a Mexican buffet. The Hotel is centrally located, within walking distance of the Zocola, one of the prettiest and most entertaining plazas you will ever see. Camino Real is also one block from the16th century Santo Domingo church, which is gorgeous with 60,000 sheets of 23.5-carat gold leaf on its altar. English speaking staff is available to help with tours and recommendations to nearby historic sites.
