I stayed at the Barcelo Maya Tropical & Colonial Beach in January 2010 for 7 nights. This resort is approximately 1 hour on a non stop transfer from the airport. I found the resort to be quite large, with 3 basic sections comprising of the Barcelo Maya Beach and Caribe section, Barcelo Maya Tropical & Colonial Beach section and the Barcelo Maya Palace section.

The rooms were quite roomy with a generous size bathroom, separate sitting area and bedroom area. The refrigerator was stocked daily and there was a coffee pot and ironing board in the room which always comes in handy. The beach was very nice, the kind of sand you can sink your feet into. The beach is nice and long, but near the Barcelo Maya Palace property there were quite a few rocks.

Food was very good in the a la carte restaurants with great service. However you do need to make reservations with the concierge which is located in each building. The entertainment was very good, especially the circus show. There are lots of non-motorized water sports available from kayaks, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and aqua bikes. Barcelo Maya Tropical & Colonial Beach also has a dive shop located on the property for scuba divers.

I did notice that the kids club (Barcy Kids Club) was quite active and they did have a little water park area for the kids on the Barcelo Maya Tropical property which was always busy. I feel this is definitely a great family resort.

They do have sections in each resort area that is called Premium Select. For that extra cost, you receive premium liquor, Jr. Suite rooms, free internet access and the rooms are closer to the pool, and you have access to the premium lounge.
